Course Description

The Surf Lifeguard will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required in order to provide professional patrolling and water services, in surf conditions, with rescue skills and advanced fitness requirements.

The course is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times and lifting. The Surf Lifeguard Award is comprised of a variety of units and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification.

The SLSGB Surf Lifeguard Award is the top lifeguard award in the UK, recognised internationally for beach lifeguards.

The course is delivered combining theory and practical sessions, to shape you into a future surf lifeguard.

This course is delivered predominantly in English with instructors from the UK that speaks fluent Spanish over 40 hours, running typically from a Monday to Friday following with an exam on the Saturday.

All of our courses include:

  • Membership to SLSGB (compulsory to undertake the award)
  • SLSGB Beach or Surf Lifeguard Certification Fee
  • SLSGB Beach or Surf Lifeguard Manual
  • 5 Intensive Days of group training and additional trainer support if required
  • Assessment fee

Our life guarding training is based in a series of modules that combine both practical and theory, spending in the water an average of 4 hours each day. Lifeguards candidates must successfully complete both the theory and practical part to obtain the qualification. (Download the full program and syllabus from here)

Entry Requirements

  • The minimum age for the course is 16 years old on the date of assessment
  • Minimum Guided Learning Hours - 40 hours prior to assessment 
  • Being able to swim 400 metres in under 7.5 minutes
  • Being able to run 200 metres in under 40 seconds

  • Towels
  • Sun hat and sun glasses
  • Waterproof sun cream
  • Wetsuit 


24 months from the date of the assessment, with the option of taking a Lifeguard proficiency test prior to the expiry date and every 12 months thereafter to maintain status.
